The Great Outdoors - Embroideries

1. Heygate Ladies

2. Coldharbour Lane

3. Wendy

These are the three embroideries I created for 'The Great Outdoors' exhibition. I took walks and bus journeys around where I was living in Camberwell, photographing people and then making drawings of them. I wanted to capture quiet moments of ‘The Great Outdoors’ in an urban environment. There’s a lot going on, people going to East Street market, waiting for the 185 to Victoria, trying to avoid male harassment in the street or bumping into an old friend. I documented the hustle and bustle of Walworth Road, the area around Camberwell Green and Coldharbour Lane on my walk home to Southwell Road. I have created three embroideries, one from each of these journeys.

The Great Outdoors - Pictures

Here are a few pictures of my work installed at Nest Gallery's 'The Great Outdoors' exhibition at the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs on Leather Lane which closed this weekend.

I've got my illustration of 'Coldharbour Lane' from The Great Outdoors of South London series published alongside an illustration by the talented Dan Shapiro.

The issue contains 168 pages of wonderful illustration and writing from some very talented people including some awesome work from Rose Blake and words on procrastination from Nick White.

You can buy this treasury of joy Limner #2 directly from their shop here, where you can add Limner #1 to your shopping cart too.

South London Tripstitch

I've been working on a number of projects, one being the new Nest Gallery exhibition, opening in November at the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs in Clerkenwell. Anna Lincoln and I have been working with the Exhibition Curator of the space and five other Nest artists to put together 'The Great Outdoors'. Currently the work is in progress, we're going to print soon and things are gradually building momentum. My work is a series of three embroideries depicting South London, in particular three stops starting at the Heygate Estate and finishing at the Camberwell end of Coldharbour Lane, close to my house. Above is a preview of my 'Heygate Ladies' embroidery, the first of the 'tripstitch' (phrase coined by Anna).
