<p>I worked with Emma to create the cover illustration and six interior illustrations for Rebecca's book, where she uses the space of fairytales to explore themes of voice, concealment and transformation. The cover features shadowy glimpses of foxes through brambles, honeysuckle, apple and rowan trees, printed in riso in green and black at The Holodeck, Birmingham.<p> Reena Makwanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00213001103523609827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5600354367365410806.post-14940099353393386162021-11-16T07:33:00.002-08:002021-11-16T07:33:49.141-08:00Partridge in a Pear Tree, Christmas Card, 2021<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinGaKoz-unUdTyK6jSs8X90xg_49p5KY_oRa0g9xUF55MuqMRSlpF4E83Kl2B4HqfEe9RXOdnJEVxgWbaZqieuhyV0t4fpxUqh2fX9YNIywp_tKGcMPr9ANvfBBMb1ZMq4WEORxobVDQQ/s2048/IMG_8725.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinGaKoz-unUdTyK6jSs8X90xg_49p5KY_oRa0g9xUF55MuqMRSlpF4E83Kl2B4HqfEe9RXOdnJEVxgWbaZqieuhyV0t4fpxUqh2fX9YNIywp_tKGcMPr9ANvfBBMb1ZMq4WEORxobVDQQ/s400/IMG_8725.JPG"/></a></div>

I love illustrating this series of kebab shops from the UK and Ireland for Pit Magazine, Issue 10, The Kebab Special. The team asked readers for their favourites, which became this list of ten. The issue is available to buy <a href="https://pitmagazine.uk/">here</a>. Cover illustration by Jimmy Turrell. Thanks to Holly Catford for her encouraging art direction! <p>I've had lots of ideas for these bookplates and finally put pen to paper to draw these up. They are roughly A6, but slightly smaller due to being hand cut. The four designs are a cooking pot, a cut pie, kitchen scales and the contents of a spice rack. They are printed onto 80gsm paper with room to write your name, a gift recipients name or your address. Suitable for any of your cookbooks, notebooks, food non fiction. For sale on my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1017779310/four-food-bookplates-roughly-a6?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1">Etsy</a> for £3.50 (including postage).<p>Reena Makwanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00213001103523609827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5600354367365410806.post-68900004900462976852021-05-13T09:45:00.003-07:002021-06-01T02:55:36.325-07:00Cheese - Issue 1<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF-5SwEBJ_7CilhM6wEkwqwGSaWcnqFQ3oyKpOvmPP03VuncGTfNPTIMz0vLg5J9NotF0zc7gXdL_TCS7DO2uz12RKhcToy2c_j0ewlZzaaYbAFOtejAkSzTr9eJf3K3GI6om12qw09F4/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana3.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF-5SwEBJ_7CilhM6wEkwqwGSaWcnqFQ3oyKpOvmPP03VuncGTfNPTIMz0vLg5J9NotF0zc7gXdL_TCS7DO2uz12RKhcToy2c_j0ewlZzaaYbAFOtejAkSzTr9eJf3K3GI6om12qw09F4/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana3.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4wttzCnKA09uVEDCf1tV7ldtxsXxrdeK2sWFIzMHOwHqOXjlCdnOdHOQilebTS_DADr7UVZn-_PlJz-osrgqzTw-xL8LKcxzuu-_clSK5XCO_RgiVRGjLXQwf2uAWt9EI3gnt_rjlGrA/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana5.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4wttzCnKA09uVEDCf1tV7ldtxsXxrdeK2sWFIzMHOwHqOXjlCdnOdHOQilebTS_DADr7UVZn-_PlJz-osrgqzTw-xL8LKcxzuu-_clSK5XCO_RgiVRGjLXQwf2uAWt9EI3gnt_rjlGrA/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana5.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyFIo4keoFbMOqZ3nQbO0VECZWbF_vyHuISADQ2X3FHn2eV1j4MxKZgHuTdua-F4smSqdNPMI937EVJ0L3Y1IJBlFgJJN_9E0HWVPUFUY_NDGal_B5sp0Wr4_tPNti5v6RWLnc5euOTjM/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana2.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyFIo4keoFbMOqZ3nQbO0VECZWbF_vyHuISADQ2X3FHn2eV1j4MxKZgHuTdua-F4smSqdNPMI937EVJ0L3Y1IJBlFgJJN_9E0HWVPUFUY_NDGal_B5sp0Wr4_tPNti5v6RWLnc5euOTjM/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana2.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6bl-d-599suON1keqxLGFBI_O0wub52pX6uStVbfcjCP-rmJBStZZlY3NyUz5C69JmGMob617Ele5aAaigKkP3jYMt1XakCtWZx3IaeUrZ_1SHuFgyWS_jjI6zk-VoGz3PInQlAZslQQ/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana4.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6bl-d-599suON1keqxLGFBI_O0wub52pX6uStVbfcjCP-rmJBStZZlY3NyUz5C69JmGMob617Ele5aAaigKkP3jYMt1XakCtWZx3IaeUrZ_1SHuFgyWS_jjI6zk-VoGz3PInQlAZslQQ/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana4.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7_okp8E6Scbmgq0NjB1vYqoq4z0a3a_eztpcDcAGrvQTuLD7PcURUIgpZaUz-oMOgTo_dlKo0Is18dZNUCr67NHo4yHqCg3CNtA6d5rJ9T5fZryw2fBOhAwBawwFYjurK15FcUktlKZs/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana6.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7_okp8E6Scbmgq0NjB1vYqoq4z0a3a_eztpcDcAGrvQTuLD7PcURUIgpZaUz-oMOgTo_dlKo0Is18dZNUCr67NHo4yHqCg3CNtA6d5rJ9T5fZryw2fBOhAwBawwFYjurK15FcUktlKZs/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana6.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo4v5kK2rNhXQmfc37wFVb2ysnjczpK2f8edvwE8lcUaq13R_IG_bxgbg0d8yv5cSrOiuzgA7wW65M397GbL1VMjuZazkgxD6pr2o9SsXkdgnpKzsSS2-zpIGXyUh0KYi_jLAvTw-nvg/s670/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana1.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="503" data-original-width="670" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo4v5kK2rNhXQmfc37wFVb2ysnjczpK2f8edvwE8lcUaq13R_IG_bxgbg0d8yv5cSrOiuzgA7wW65M397GbL1VMjuZazkgxD6pr2o9SsXkdgnpKzsSS2-zpIGXyUh0KYi_jLAvTw-nvg/s400/CheeseMagWebReenaMakwana1.jpg"/></a></div>
<P>I was really pleased to produce these illustrations for the first issue of 'Cheese' magazine, put together by Holly Catford, Anna Sulan Masing and Apoorva Sripathi. <P>
<P>I worked with art director Holly Catford to illustrate two parallel pieces by Emma Hughes on Tomme de Savoie and Apoorva Sripathi on Tomme de Semancheri from The Farm, Chennai. I also drew a portrait of Maria Luisa Jarava to accompany her interview. <P>

<p>I loved creating this illustration for 'Culinary Dead Ends' for a Vittles piece that includes contributions by Apoorva Sripathi, Aaron Vallance, Jason Okundaye and Anna Parker. I developed the idea from the Jonathan's idea of a culinary family tree. I drew each active hand accompanied by a slowly dying plant entwined around the hands. I was sent a selection of the pieces and focussed on Ovocne knedliky (Czech dumplings with apricots, Anna Parker), blood filloas (Marie Anne Benavente) and Algerian couscous variations (Leila Gamaz). <p>I wasn't sure if I would do a Christmas card this year, but I decided a couple of weeks ago to stitch this Autumnwatch inspired card, which features a festive fox, badger, mole, robin and squirrel. The card comes as a set of four with envelopes and is blank for your own message. Focusing on the locations of personal importance and exploring connections to local Black British History, Carole considers how these places have changed and are changing.

<p>I created this risograph print based on a drawing of my view of Brixton Underground Station in February 2020. Originally printed for an exhibition alongside a series of five Victoria Line embroideries that was cancelled. I've now made seven avaiable to buy on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/846936932/brixton-underground-station-a4-riso" target="_blank">my Etsy </a>out of an edition of 20.
