International Contemporary Stitched Art Exhbition

I'm really pleased to have two of my embroidery pieces exhibited in this upcoming group show organised by the Society for Embroidered Works. Set up by Cat Frampton and Emily Tull, the exhibition will showcase a broad range of artists working with embroidery. The two pieces I will be showing are observations of commuters during my morning or afternoon journey on the Victoria Line, a series I hope to continue with.

The show runs from Tuesday 12th November to Sunday 17th November, 10.30am to 6.30pm (Sunday 17th 10.30am to 1pm). Please do pop down during the times if you can and I'll be posting my work on here after the show.

'Sightings' - An Exhibition by Freya Lines and Reena Makwana - Pictures

Thanks again to everyone who visited 'Sightings' last week - we hope you enjoyed our viewpoint on Clerkenwell! We had a lot of fun putting it together. For those who didn't make it, here are photographs from the show. A huge thanks to Ben Ripley who took these photographs for us (apart from picture 7 which I took off Charlene Lam's Creative Clerkenwell Twitter Account and picture 11). You can see more of Freya's work on her website and do check out her Etsy if there is something you'd like to order! You can visit my website here and my Etsy here.

Thanks to Craft Central for letting us have the Showcase space!

Clerkenwell Embroideries

Here are the eight embroideries I made of Clerkenwell to display at 'Sightings' - A dachshund in St John's Square, browsers in Leather Lane, a hipster in Saffron Hill, walking through Smithfields, loitering outside the Order of St John or taking a tour or having a tantrum.

'Sightings' - An Exhibition by Freya Lines and Reena Makwana

In August, Freya and me will be showing work inspired by Clerkenwell at Craft Central in August. Here's the flyer designed by Freya and a portion of our press release for you to read below! Please do drop me an email if you would like anymore information.

Tuesday 13 August 2013- Saturday 17 August 2013

Showcase Gallery, Craft Central, 33-35 St John’s Square, London, EC1M 4DS

Opening Hours: Tuesday – Friday 11am-6pm | Saturday 12pm-5pm

Private View: Wednesday 14 August 2013 6.30pm-8.30pm

‘Sightings’ brings together two artistic viewpoints on Clerkenwell by Freya Lines and Reena Makwana, to compliment the position of the Showcase Gallery at Craft Central. As well as showing new work, the exhibition will show an insight into development work from both artists for this show and products from previous projects and collections for sale.

Freya Lines finds inspiration from nature and her work created for this exhibition shows ‘sightings’ of nature in the city, specifically in and around Clerkenwell. A tree framed by the arch of a building, a vine growing around a front door, or plant pots placed on a windowsill all contribute to the aesthetic of Freya’s designs. She will be presenting a new collection of paper cut works.

Reena Makwana has been working on a series of embroideries inspired by the people of Clerkenwell. Working from photos, she has developed drawings into embroideries of workers on their lunch break perusing stalls on Leather Lane, locals outside the gates of The Order of St John, hipsters, tantrums and dog walkers. The embroideries work together to show a visual map of the people of Clerkenwell.

Clerkenwell Embroideries

I'm currently working on a series of embroideries inspired by the people of Clerkenwell. Since January, I've been taking photos and drawing people from Leather Lane, Smithfields Market and St John's. The embroideries will be shown at Craft Central alongside a few drawings and ceramics in an exhibition with designer Freya Lines in August. Freya will be at Craft Central's 'Made in Clerkenwell' this weekend, so make sure you visit and check out her wonderful products.

Above is a preview of some completed embroideries - one from Leather Lane market which I have posted on here before, two men outside the garden of The Order of St John and a hipster loitering near Saffron Hill. I'll have more details about the exhibition in the coming months.
